Protecting Our History
The Samuel Shalit House is a 90-year-old treasure in the North Valley. The building’s distinctive style and beautiful details have been enjoyed by generations of Albuquerque’s residents, most recently as the beloved family restaurant Mr. Powdrell’s Barbeque.
The Powdrell family showed their love and care for Burqueños through food and service, and we aim to continue and expand that tradition in a new way.
The National Register of Historic Places and the New Mexico State Register of Cultural Properties both recognize the value of this property to our community. We believe the best way to continue to protect it is to ensure it continues to function as a place where people come to feel fulfilled, supported, and nourished.

We’re building a funding stack. Want to discuss how your organization can help?
We are exploring engagement with city, state, and federal programs to acquire, update, and restore this historic building without altering its character. Private funding sources offering grants or financing are also in the mix! Local volunteers that would like to donate your skills or elbow grease to revitalize the landscaping of the property are also welcomed.
